Lease (tenancy agreement)

A lease, or tenancy agreement, is the written contract by which a landlord makes a home available to a tenant in exchange for rent, setting out the term, the amount, the charges and each party's obligations.

What is a lease?

A lease is the contract that organises a tenancy. It binds a landlord and a tenant and sets the rules of their relationship: identity of the parties, description of the property, term, rent and charges, security deposit and how the tenancy can end. A written, signed lease is the best protection against disputes.

What a lease should contain

A solid lease states in black and white the rent, the charges, the due date, the security deposit and the inventory of fixtures. Anything left unwritten becomes a point of friction the day a disagreement arises.

From paper to a structured lease

A lease in a drawer is hard to act on. A rental management tool ties each lease to its unit and tenant, links the rent receipts and payments, and turns due dates into automatic reminders.
