Rent arrears

Rent arrears are amounts owed by a tenant for rent or service charges that have not been paid by the due date. Preventing and tracking them is central to healthy rental management.

What are rent arrears?

Arrears arise the moment rent or a charge is not paid by the due date set in the lease. A one-off delay is a single missed payment; installed arrears are a debt that stacks up month after month.

Prevent rather than chase

Most of it is won upstream: a clear lease, systematic rent receipts, a firm due date, and a fast follow-up on the first day of delay. A debt caught at five days is far easier to recover than one of three months. Our guide sets out nine levers to reduce arrears.

Spot lateness in real time

You only reduce what you measure. A manager dashboard shows the collection rate, the amount of arrears and their age, and flags immediately the residence or tenant that is slipping.
